Jaugada Hill ::- Jaugada Is An Ancient For That Served As A Mauryan Fortified Capital Of the Kalinga Province Jaugada Is Located Near The Cities Of Berhampur And Purusattampur In Ganjam District Of Odisha, India. Jaugada Is An Important Archaeological And Historical Site. Jaugada Lies 35 Kms North- west Of Berhampur And 160 Kms South- West Of Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Jaugada Is Famous For Its Version Of The Monumental Stone- Cut Edicts In Prakrit Of The Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. Jaugada Is The Location Of Some Of The Major Rock Edicts Of Ashoka. Inscribed Circa 250 BC. Major Rock Edicts 1- 10 And 14 Are Inscribed On A Central Rock In The Compound, AS Well As Separate Edicts 1 & 2. This Site Was First Documented In 2001 By A Team From The University Of Heidelberg. Jaugada (Lac Fort ) As It Was Know In Classical Times, Is Said To Be Associated With Mahabharat Episode. Tradition Ascribes That The Fort Of Jaugada Was Built By Duryadhan Of Mahabharat Fame. Its Name Jau Or Lac Is From A Tradition That It Was Made Of Lac And Was Therefore Impregnable As No Enemy Could Scale The Walls As They Were Smooth And Slippery. Juagada Stand As The Symbol Of All The Historical Heritage Connected With The Rushikulya Valley Civilization. From The Bank Of This River, Silver Coins Of The Premauryan Age Have Been Discovered. The Ashokan Inscription At Jaugada Is Incised On A Rock Face Some 30 Feet Long And 15 Feet High Elevated About 12 Feet On A Mass Of Granitic Gneiss. Jaugada Is A Part Of The Malati Hill Range.
Jaugada Was A Fort In Around 3rd Century BC To 7th Century BC. Since The Place Was Already A Flourishing Town Of Ancient Odisha., As Suggest The Archaeologists Ashoka Decided To Inscribe The Edicts Here, Far Away From Dhauli Where The Bloody Kalinga War Took Place. Various Materials Like Plain Pottery, Painted Pottery, Knobbed Vessels, Iron Implements And Beads Of Shell, Bone, Agate Etc Were Excavated Here Symbolizing The Life And Culture Of The Rushikulya Valley Civilizations. The Approach To Jaugada Reminded Of The Heritage Sites Of Lumbini In Nepal That Are Connected To Lord Buddha.
