Hirakud Dam Odisha ::- Hirakud Dam Is Situated In Sambalpur District Of Odisha State. It Is Only 15 Km From North Sambalpur, The Longest Earthen Dam Of The World Stands In Its Lone Majesty Across The Great River Mahanadi. Which Drains An Area Of 1,33,090 Square Kms More Than Twice The Area Of Sri Lanka. 

The Bulk Of Hirakud Dam Contains Earth, Concrete And Masonry Materials Sufficient To Make A Road 8 Meters Wide And Pare It From KanyaKumari To Kashmir And Amritsar To Dibrugarh In Assam. From Horizon To Horizon The Reservoir From The Largest Artificial Lake In Asia With An Area Of 746 Square Km Shore Line Over 640 Kms. A Twenty One Kilometer Drive On The Dyke Offers A Unique Experience Of Calm Serenity And Majesty Of Nature. One Can Enjoy The Sight Of Mighty Hirakud Dam And The Fantastic Expanse Of Water From The Top Of The Revolving Minatare Called Gandhi Minor And Nehru Minor Provide Some Of The Best Views. 

The Construction Of The Dam Was Proposed By M. Visveswararya To Truckle The Challenges Of Devastating Floods In The Mahanadi Delta. A Detailed Investigation Report Was Submitted In 1945. The Project Was Taken Up By The Central Waterways. Irrigation And Navigation Commission On 15 March 1946 Sir Hawthrone Lewis, The Governor Of Odisha, Laid The Foundation Stone Of The Hirakud Dam. 

Pandit Jawaharlala Nehru Laid The First Batch Of Concrete On 12 April 1948. The Dam Was Constructed To Help Alleviate These Challenges By Controlling River Flow The Through The Drainage System. The Hirkud Dam Regulates The Flow Of The Mahanadi River And Produces Electricity Through Several Hydroelectric Plants. The Dam Is Significate Source Of Power Generation For The Country, Along With Power Generation The Largest Artificial Lake In Asia Also Provides Irrigation To The Region. The Dam Was Completed In 1957. More Than 200 Temples Were Lost In The Construction Of The Dam. The Hidden Temples Are Visible To Boating Visitors During The Summer Months Of May And June.
