SURADA DAM FAMOUS HISTORICAL PLACE OF GANJAM DISTRICT IN (ODISHA)
Surada Dam (Surada Ghai) ::- Surada Dam Is Located At A Distance Of Around 80 Km From Silk City Berhampur Of Ganjam District In Odisha State. It Is Also Known For Proffering A Scenic Charm Which Makes It A Prominent Picnic Spot In The Region. It Blends It Self Beautifully Into An Enchanting Picnic Spot. This Dam Was Built In 1896. The Water Of Padma River (Popularly Known As Patma River) Is Reserved In It. At Times, The Water Of This Reservoir Is Channelized To Rushikulya River For Irrigation. There Is A Children's Park At The Adjacent Site Of The Dam.
History Of Dam ::- It Is A Historical Famous Place. In Ancient Time, It Was Named As Surada Gada. Surada Is A Sanskrit Word Which Means The Place Of God. It Was Established By The 1st King Of Surada Whom Name Was Raja Sandhadhanu Sing In 1474. Once This Land Was Under Khidishingi Kingdom Now Some Part Of Kingdom Is Mohana Block Of Gajapati District. While Partition Among 4 Sons Of The Last Khidishingi King Raja Baliar Singh. It Had Divided Into 4 Kingdoms Which Are Badagada, Dhorakote, Surada And Sheragada Since 1574.
Now Badagada Is Village Under Surada Block And Dhorakote, Sheragada Are Two Separate Blocks In Ganjam District. When The Britishers Had Ruled Surada They Took This Zamindari Along With Undivided Ganjam District Into Madras Presidency Which Is Written In The List Of Zamindari Estates In Madras Presidency. This Enticing Reservoir Traces Its History From Late 19th Century And Built Across The River Padma. With Its Resplendent Beauty And Serene Setting, Surada Reservoir Locally Known As Sorada Ghai And A Renowned Tourist Place For People All Of Ages.
Surada Also Houses The Headquarters For Surada Tehsil. There Was Probably A Dadhi Bamana Statue Prior To The Temple Exist Now. In The Second Half Of The 18th Century Raja Kunjabihari Singh (1775 - 1815) Built The Present Jagannath Temple In The Periphery Of His Place. There Are 5 Shiva Lingas In The Sanctum Sanctorum Of The Temple. There Has Been A Saying That Lingas Were Consecrated By Lord Ram While Going To Lanka. The Present Temple Built By Raja Narendra Dhabala (935 - 965). Brudha Lingeswar Temple Built By Khindiri srunga King Bhimasen Dev (900 - 935). In The 17 Th Century Some Musilms Had Come To Surada Nawab Zafer Ali Built A Mosque In Surada At That Time, That Old Mosque Had Collapsed. Christians Had Come To Suarada Around 1853. The Roman Catholic Church Was Built In Between 1916 - 1919. The Sound Of The Church Bell Can Be Heard In 5 Km Radius Around Surada.
